Recording

Greg Tobler at the recording consoleGreg Tobler received his BS in Sound Recording Technology from SUNY Fredonia, where he worked alongside and studied with professors and professional sound engineers Dave Fridmann, Armand Petri, and Bernd Gottinger.

After receiving his degree, Tobler began his professional recording career at Allaire Studios (Shokan, NY) building and working in the Great Hall Studio. Facilities there included an SSL 9000 J Series and Neve 8068 recording consoles, multiple Studer 827’s for 48 tracks of analog or 48 channels of Protools. While installing the Great Hall studio at Allaire, Tobler worked with John Stoyrk (of the Walters/Storyk Design Group) and George Augsberger, two of the worlds best studio designers. Once the Great Hall Studio was completed, Allaire Studios was hailed as a world class multi-room facility able to accommodate the largest sessions and major label artists. Tobler worked on many sessions while at Allaire including Norah Jones, David Bowie, Joan Baez, and Jack DeJohnette.

After Allaire Greg designed and carried out the upgrade to the famous Buffalo NY studio, Audio Magic. He rebuilt, recapped and cleaned the DDA AMR24 and rewired the outboard racks. Once the upgrade was complete Tobler teamed up with legendary drummer/producer Gary Mallaber (Steve Miller Band, Van Morrison, etc…) to co-produce and engineer Vermont’s up and coming band The Grift. Also while in Buffalo, Tobler worked at Crosswater Digital Media as a recording and mastering engineer for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He recorded world famous violinist Josha Bell and mastered his performance, which was later broadcast on NPR across the state. Also while at Crosswater, Tobler did voice-overs for radio spots.

Next Greg moved to Albany NY and began his freelance career. He worked out of a few different studios, primarily Sound Check Republic and Cotton Hill Studios as well as his home studio. Albany is where we started his A2 career. Teaming with veteran engineer Dave Cook, Tobler was involved with a live recording of Todd Rundgren.

Now Greg lives in Stamford CT and has graduated to owning his own Protools HD 5.1 studio. With an impressive array of his own gear Tobler brings what he needs to a studio or he brings his own personal studio to do a recording. Large or small he can accommodate any artist’s needs. Tobler excels at sonically reflecting the appropriate mood for any recording project.

Recording Perspective

“As producer, and a musician, I am excited by projects that stretch musical sounds and concepts, and I see the development of an artist’s or group’s personal sound as the guiding force behind a session. I strive to give artists a precise, accurate and efficient recording process. As a producer, I bring to projects the ability to enable artists to clearly express their musical abilities and ambitions. This is achieved by helping an artist to reach a comfort level in the studio and by enhancing their ability to work creatively and ambitiously. I work with artists to define their priorities, and focus on what is important for them to convey through their music. This enables us to create music that is emotionally expressive and true to the artist’s goals for the session. In addition, we work together to reach new levels that artists could not have created outside of the studio setting.”

“Recording should be a time of musical exploration for an artist or group, not just a time to ‘get down’ a song or two. New sounds can be discovered and songs can find new life in recorded form. My primary desire is for the artist to be happy with the finished product – whatever it takes to get there.”
