Greg Tobler has always had an interest in knowing the ins and outs of the installation and operation of audio hardware. He gained valuable experience in this area during his collegiate studies at SUNY Fredonia in the Sound Recording Technology Program. He later expanded his skills during years of professional experience working in multi-million dollar facilities. Several recording studios and other professional venues have benefited greatly from his experience and skills. He has recently done several audio installations on behalf of SimplexGrinnell. Some of his work is highlighted below: |

Winged Foot Golf Clubhouse "In its storied clubhouse, you would expect to find the absolute state-of-the-art, Rolls Royce of audio systems. “And,” said freelance acoustical contractor Greg Tobler, “you would have. Except that until I recently finished an extensive Symetrix SymNet/QSC installation that brought it to the cutting edge of 21st Century technology, it was the state-of-the-art from 1970! There were nine 70-volt amps all wired into a custom-made switcher that could turn different zones on and off. It was old school, but very sophisticated. The problem was that the system was completely inflexible and required an advanced degree in sound engineering to understand and operate it. Moreover, if someone wanted to turn the volume down in, say, the Grill Room, they had to trundle off to a closet behind the front desk. It was not the sort of smooth, transparent operation that Winged Foot’s elite members expected.” |

Bijou Theatre The oldest movie theatre in the country recently upgraded their space to include live performance as well as movie viewing. Greg was called in to help design and install the multi-purpose sound system for the venue. Being that there are two main uses for the space, one being live performance and the other being movie playback; the theatre required two different types of systems. The theatre system is a 7.1 top of the line JBL system with QSC amplifiers. The video projector is a 15,000 lumen Sanyo projector with hook ups for blu-ray, streaming web video and many HD & SD formats. When the space is used for live performance for bands, a large format speaker sound system can be brought in to interface with the 32 channel Mackie Onyx console, which is permenantly installed with a 32 channel snake going down to the stage. A line array could not be permenantly hung because it would impede the screen's line of sight. Also this gives incoming performers the flexablitlity of using a speaker system of their liking. |
