Installation & Service

Greg Tobler has always had an interest in knowing the ins and outs of the installation and operation of audio hardware. He gained valuable experience in this area during his collegiate studies at SUNY Fredonia in the Sound Recording Technology Program. He later expanded his skills during years of professional experience working in multi-million dollar facilities. Several recording studios and other professional venues have benefited greatly from his experience and skills.

Tobler has recently done several audio installations on behalf of SimplexGrinnell.

Some of his work is highlighted below:

Winged Foot is one of the most prestigious golf clubs in the world, home of the 2006 U.S. Open, 2004 U.S. Amateur, and 1997 PGA Championship. In 2007, Tobler upgraded the audio system in the clubhouse using the Symetrix SymNet 8×8 DSP system with ARC-2 Adaptive Remote Control wall panels. Here’s an excerpt from a feature about his work there:

In its storied clubhouse, you would expect to find the absolute state-of-the-art, Rolls Royce of audio systems. “And,” said freelance acoustical contractor Greg Tobler, “you would have. Except that until I recently finished an extensive Symetrix SymNet/QSC installation that brought it to the cutting edge of 21st Century technology, it was the state-of-the-art from 1970! There were nine 70-volt amps all wired into a custom-made switcher that could turn different zones on and off. It was old school, but very sophisticated. The problem was that the system was completely inflexible and required an advanced degree in sound engineering to understand and operate it. Moreover, if someone wanted to turn the volume down in, say, the Grill Room, they had to trundle off to a closet behind the front desk. It was not the sort of smooth, transparent operation that Winged Foot’s elite members expected.”

Shokan, NY
Tobler helped to install the Great Hall studio at Allaire, working with John Stoyrk (of the Walters/Storyk Design Group) and George Augspurger, two of the world’s best studio designers. Once the Great Hall Studio was completed, Allaire Studios was hailed as a world class multi-room facility able to accommodate the largest sessions and major label artists. Tobler worked on many sessions while at Allaire including Norah Jones, David Bowie, Joan Baez, and Jack DeJohnette. Facilities there included an SSL 9000 J Series and Neve 8068 recording consoles, multiple Studer 827’s for 48 tracks of analog or 48 channels of Protools.
